As mentioned yesterday one of the games that I managed to get along to this past weekend was the U20 reserve team (Primavera as it is called in Italy) clash between Fiorentina and Juventus.
With the sudden passing of their first team captain Davide Astori still fresh in their minds it was obvious to see that the lads from Fiorentina were highly motivated to get a result against their rivals from the north.
The Primavera competition in Italy is a national competition, with the games being televised live. You might therefore notice that today’s clip is a little more professionally done than normal, care of the team at RAI Sport. The competition is broken into three groups with finals at the end deciding the national champion. Fiorentina is competing in Group A with clubs such Inter Milan, Atalanta, Roma, Milan, Juventus, Napoli and Lazio. Fiorentina are currently sitting in fourth place four points behind leaders Atalanta with 8 games left to play in the group stage.
The players in this clip are all professional footballers. In Italy between the ages of U9 and U13 players have yearly agreements with their clubs. Once they hit U14, clubs sign 4 year agreements with the player. That means between the ages of U14 and U17 players generally stay with one club. Once they hit U18 those players that are good enough are invited to sign professional contracts.
Enjoy this clip complete with Italian commentary and I’ll be back tomorrow with more insights.
